Use an MP4 as a Live Wallpaper on Google Pixel
Google does not promise that any user MP4 can be set directly through Pixel's wallpaper picker. Here is the honest workflow, including the third-party Google Play step.
This guide is in preview and is not yet indexed by search engines. We are still collecting first-hand verification before promoting it.
Who this guide is for
You own a Google Pixel or another stock-Android phone, you have a downloaded MP4 from this site, and you want it to play as a live wallpaper. Pixel supports your own photos and built-in dynamic effects out of the box; arbitrary MP4 files are not promised by Google's own documentation.
What this site outputs (and what it doesn't)
This site outputs a 9:16 portrait MP4. It does not output an Android live wallpaper package (no .apk, no .wallpaper bundle) and cannot make Pixel's system wallpaper picker accept the MP4 directly. A Google Play video-wallpaper app is required to bridge the file to the live wallpaper surface.
Before you start
- A Google Pixel or stock-Android phone running Android 12 or later (Wallpaper & style is the modern entry point on Pixel 6 and later).
- The MP4 saved on the device — Downloads or Photos.
- A trusted video-wallpaper app installed from the Google Play store. We do not recommend a specific app because policies, ads, and permissions change.
- Acceptance that this step is a third-party app workflow, not a Pixel-native one.
Step-by-step
Pixel's own Wallpaper & style flow is the starting point. The video-wallpaper application happens inside a Play-store app, not Pixel Settings.
- 1
Download the MP4 from this site
Generate or pick a wallpaper, tap Download, and confirm it lands in your Downloads or Photos.
- 2
Open Wallpaper & style on Pixel
Long-press the home screen, then tap Wallpaper & style. Confirm the system picker only lists photos and Google's preset / dynamic wallpapers — not arbitrary MP4 files.
- 3
Install a Google Play video-wallpaper app
Open the Play store, search for a video-wallpaper app, and review its permissions and ratings before installing. Skip any app that asks for unrelated permissions or that you cannot find in the Play store.
- 4
Import the MP4 in the app
Open the installed app and use its import flow to point at the downloaded MP4. The app converts the file into the format Android needs for the live wallpaper service.
- 5
Apply as live wallpaper from the app
From inside the video-wallpaper app, tap its Set / Apply control. Pixel will return to the Wallpaper & style screen with the app as the active live wallpaper source. Lock-screen support depends on the app and your Pixel model.
If something doesn't work
Wallpaper & style does not show a video option
That is expected. Pixel 6 and later expose a Create or customize wallpapers entry, but Google's documentation does not promise direct MP4 ingestion. Use a Google Play video-wallpaper app for that step.
The third-party app shows ads or asks for unrelated permissions
Uninstall it and choose another from the Play store. Side-loaded APKs from outside Google Play are not a safe workaround.
Battery usage spikes after applying the live wallpaper
Video wallpapers redraw the framebuffer on every wake. Lower the FPS or frame size inside the app, or fall back to a static wallpaper at night.
Lock screen still shows the previous wallpaper
Pixel restricts what live wallpapers can paint on the lock screen depending on Android version and launcher. If your app does not advertise lock-screen support, that is a hard limit of the workflow.
Safety notes
Stick to the Google Play store for the video-wallpaper app. Google's Pixel Help article does not endorse any third-party APK source, and neither does this guide. Set a battery monitor (in Settings → Battery) the first day, since live wallpapers can affect runtime.
Official sources
Google's Pixel Help article on changing wallpapers is the primary source. It explicitly limits the supported inputs to user photos and Pixel's built-in dynamic effects.
