Wallpaper Engine companion

Use Your MP4 with Wallpaper Engine on Android

Wallpaper Engine on Android is a companion app, not a standalone editor. Here is the official transfer flow, the version floor, and the lock-screen caveat.

This guide is in preview and is not yet indexed by search engines. We are still collecting first-hand verification before promoting it.

Who this guide is for

You already own Wallpaper Engine on Steam, you have an Android device running 8.1 or later, and you want to use the downloaded MP4 from this site as a Wallpaper Engine wallpaper on your phone or tablet.

What this site outputs (and what it doesn't)

This site outputs a 9:16 portrait MP4. It does not output a Wallpaper Engine .pkg or .json project, and does not run the Wallpaper Engine editor. You will use Wallpaper Engine's own desktop editor and transfer flow to bring the MP4 onto Android.

Before you start

  • Android 8.1 or newer on your phone or tablet (the official requirement on the Wallpaper Engine Android page).
  • Wallpaper Engine purchased and installed on a Windows PC via Steam, and able to run on the same local network as the Android device.
  • The Wallpaper Engine Mobile Companion app installed from the Google Play store (recommended path).
  • The MP4 saved on the PC. We do not recommend the Direct APK install path unless you are already an advanced Wallpaper Engine user.

Step-by-step

These steps follow Wallpaper Engine's official Android page. Workshop browsing is not supported in-app; the PC version drives the transfer.

  1. 1

Install Wallpaper Engine Mobile Companion from Google Play

Open the Play store on your Android device and install Wallpaper Engine. The official site recommends the Play store path over a direct APK download.

  2. 2

Open Wallpaper Engine on your PC

Launch Wallpaper Engine on Steam on your Windows PC. The PC version is what discovers nearby Android devices for the wireless transfer.

  3. 3

Import the MP4 into Wallpaper Engine on the PC

Use Wallpaper Engine's editor on the PC to import the MP4 you downloaded from this site as a video wallpaper project.

  4. 4

Transfer the wallpaper to your Android device

From the PC editor, use the Mobile Companion transfer flow to push the project to the phone over the local network. The official site documents this as the canonical way to add wallpapers to Wallpaper Engine on Android.

  5. 5

Apply the wallpaper from the Android app

On the phone, open Wallpaper Engine, tap the imported project, and Set as wallpaper. Lock-screen application appears automatically only on devices whose manufacturer allows live wallpapers on the lock screen.

If something doesn't work

The Workshop tab is missing on Android

Wallpaper Engine on Android cannot directly access the Steam Workshop. New wallpapers must be transferred from the PC; that is a documented limitation, not a bug.

No lock-screen wallpaper option appears

Some Android manufacturers disallow live wallpapers on the lock screen entirely. Wallpaper Engine's FAQ documents this; it is a device-level limitation.

Android version is too old

Wallpaper Engine on Android requires Android 8.1 or newer. Older Android versions cannot install the app.

PC and phone do not see each other

Both devices must be on the same local network and have Wallpaper Engine running. Firewalls on the PC or guest Wi-Fi isolation can block the discovery handshake.

Safety notes

Use the Google Play store install on Android. The Direct APK path on the official Wallpaper Engine page is documented as advanced-users-only with no automatic updates. We do not link to third-party APK mirrors.

Official sources

Wallpaper Engine's project site is the primary source; the Steam product page is referenced for the desktop counterpart.
